This DIY project allows you to upcycle everyday glass containers—such as wine bottles, pasta sauce jars, and vintage perfume vials—into eerie vessels filled with mythical ingredients like “Eye of Newt,” “Graveyard Dust,” and “Liquid Moonligh.” By distressing the glass and applying custom-designed vintage labels, you can create a hauntingly beautiful mantel display that looks like it was plucked straight from a gothic castle. Start by cleaning your collected glassware thoroughly. To give the bottles an antique, dusty appearance, paint them with a thin mixture of matte black, brown, or hunter green acrylic paint mixed with a splash of water, wiping away the excess with a paper towel so the paint settles into the crevices. For a frosted or dirty look, spray them lightly with matte clear sealant or rub them with Mod Podge mixed with a pinch of real dirt or ash. Design and print vintage-style labels on standard paper, then age them by soaking them in black tea or rubbing them with coffee grounds. Once dry, singe the edges carefully with a lighter before Mod Podging them to the bottles. Fill the jars with colored water, plastic spiders, dried moss, or faux eyeballs, and seal the tops with real corks dripped in black candle wax for an authentic, sinister finish.
