14. Spellbound Floating Candles
Bring the magic of a fantasy school’s great hall into your own home by hanging hundreds of flickering, floating candles from your ceiling. This project is a massive favorite for both kids and adults, creating a breathtaking, immersive environment that feels entirely magical. By suspending lightweight, DIY cardboard candles with invisible thread, you can create a stunning overhead canopy of lights that gently bob and flicker as people walk underneath them, turning any ordinary room into an enchanted hall.
To make these magical candles, collect cardboard toilet paper or paper towel tubes. Paint the tubes a clean, matte white or ivory. To create the illusion of melting wax, run generous drips of hot glue down the top rim of each tube before painting over them. Once dry, insert a battery-operated, flickering LED tea light into the top of each tube, securing it so the flame peeks out just above the “melted wax” rim. Use a needle to thread clear monofilament fishing line through the sides of the cardboard tube, tying it securely. Hang the candles from your ceiling using clear adhesive hooks or painter’s tape. Use a remote control to turn the tea lights on and off simultaneously, creating an instant, effortless wave of magic at the press of a button.
