By casting quick-setting concrete inside cheap plastic jack-o’-lantern trick-or-treat buckets, you can capture the iconic, playful shape of the pumpkin while giving it a sophisticated, stone-like texture that blends seamlessly with contemporary, minimalist, or rustic outdoor styling.
To make these planters, purchase a few plastic pumpkin buckets and carefully cut off the plastic handles. Lightly coat the inside of the buckets with cooking spray to act as a release agent. Mix a batch of quick-setting concrete according to the package instructions and pour it into the buckets, leaving about two inches of space at the top. To create the planting cavity, press a greased plastic cup or a smaller plastic container deep into the center of the wet concrete, weighing it down with rocks so it stays in place as the concrete cures. Tap the sides of the bucket gently to release any trapped air bubbles.
