13. Distressed Mercury Glass Candlesticks
Mercury glass was highly popular in the late 19th century for its reflective, metallic beauty. You can easily replicate this look on inexpensive glass candlesticks from a thrift store. Clean the glass thoroughly, then spray the inside (or outside, if the vessel is solid) with a light mist of water mixed with a little vinegar. While the water droplets are still wet, spray a thin coat of metallic mirror-finish spray paint over them. Let it sit for a minute, then gently dab the surface with a paper towel. The paint will lift where the water droplets were, creating a beautifully mottled, mercury-glass effect. Use these distressed candlesticks to hold tall, dripping black taper candles for a hauntingly elegant centerpiece.
