11. Nostalgic Tin Can Jack-o’-Lanterns

11

Before plastic and electricity, early American settlers made lanterns out of recycled tin cans to light their paths on dark autumn nights. To make your own, clean out empty tin cans and fill them with water, placing them in the freezer overnight. The ice will prevent the metal from denting while you work. Use a hammer and a large nail to punch holes into the tin, creating simple designs like stars, crescent moons, or spooky faces. Once finished, let the ice melt, dry the cans thoroughly, and paint the exteriors with a matte black or rust-colored paint. Place a tea light or LED candle inside, and watch as the warm light flickers through the hand-punched patterns, casting beautiful shadows.
