15. Dark Botanical Embroidery Hoop Art
Embroidery is a wonderful, slow craft that is perfect for cozy autumn evenings. For a Halloween twist, create dark botanical designs on black fabric. Start by stretching a piece of black cotton or linen fabric tightly inside a wooden embroidery hoop. You can paint the wooden hoop black or a dark walnut stain to frame your work beautifully. Use a white transfer pencil to draw your design onto the fabric—popular designs include skeletal leaves, poisonous plants like nightshade, or delicate spider webs.
Using embroidery floss in metallic gold, silver, muted greens, and deep burgundy, stitch your design using simple embroidery techniques like the backstitch, satin stitch, and French knots. The contrast of the metallic and colorful threads against the stark black background is incredibly striking. Once finished, trim the excess fabric, glue it to the inside of the hoop, and hang your finished textile art on the wall.
