Eerie Cheesecloth Spirits
Create life-sized, floating ghosts that look incredibly realistic using cheap cheesecloth and fabric stiffener. By draping wet, starch-soaked cheesecloth over a form—such as a foam mannequin head, a balloon, or even a wire frame—you can mold the fabric into the shape of a hovering spirit. Once the starch dries, the cheesecloth becomes completely rigid, holding its shape while remaining incredibly light, airy, and translucent.
Carefully remove the form, and you are left with a hollow, freestanding or hangable ghost. Suspend these figures from tree branches in your front yard or from the ceiling of your dark hallway. When the wind blows, the loose edges of the cheesecloth flutter gently, creating an incredibly eerie, lifelike movement. For an extra spooky touch, place a blue or green battery-operated LED light inside the hollow figure to make it glow from within.
