5. Gothic Pressed Flower and Skull Garland

5

For those who adore the romantic, moody aesthetic of Victorian Gothic decor, a pressed flower and skull garland is the ultimate artistic statement piece. This project beautifully marries the delicate, fleeting beauty of nature with the dark, macabre symbols of Halloween. To begin, you will need to gather a selection of deep, moody florals—such as dark red roses, purple pansies, black violas, and delicate ferns. Press these flowers several weeks in advance using a traditional flower press or heavy books lined with parchment paper. For the skulls, you can use small, lightweight paper-mâché or resin skulls, which can be painted a matte charcoal black, antique gold, or a distressed bone white using acrylic paints.

Once your flowers are fully dried and flat, use a small brush to apply a thin layer of decoupage glue (like Mod Podge) onto the surface of the skulls, carefully adhering the pressed petals and leaves in beautiful, cascading patterns across the forehead and temples, mimicking a floral crown or a botanical illustration. Seal the flowers with another gentle coat of decoupage medium to protect them. To assemble the garland, use a rich, black velvet ribbon. Attach the decorated skulls to the ribbon using hot glue or by threading the ribbon through pre-drilled holes in the sides of the skulls. Interspace the skulls with small bundles of dried lavender or dark burgundy bunny tails tied with gold thread. This breathtaking garland looks exceptionally beautiful draped over a vanity mirror, an antique bookcase, or along a dark wood dining table as a centerpiece runner.
