12. Whimsical Paper Mache Pumpkin Lantern Garland

12

For a truly classic, nostalgic Halloween feel, nothing beats the warm, friendly glow of paper-mâché pumpkin lanterns. This craft is a wonderful nod to the vintage Halloween decorations of the early 20th century, which often featured expressive, slightly mischievous faces made from molded paper. To create your own, you will need several small balloons, newspaper strips, flour-and-water paste (or watered-down school glue), orange tissue paper, black construction paper, and a string of warm white LED lights. This project takes a bit of time and patience, but the beautiful, handmade result is incredibly rewarding.

Inflate the balloons to a small, uniform size, roughly the size of a grapefruit. Wrap rubber bands vertically around the balloons to squeeze them slightly, creating those natural, organic pumpkin ridges. Apply several layers of newspaper strips dipped in the paste over the balloons, leaving a small opening around the knot at the top. Once the paper-mâché is completely dry and hard, pop and remove the balloons. Cover the hollow shells with a final layer of bright orange tissue paper to give them a vibrant, translucent color. Cut out classic, vintage-style eyes, noses, and grins from black paper and glue them onto the pumpkins. Insert an LED bulb from your light string into the top opening of each pumpkin lantern. When lit, these lanterns glow with a soft, nostalgic warmth, casting a magical, friendly light across your cozy autumn home.
