7. Stained Glass Cathedral Art
New Orleans’ historic architecture is defined by its stunning cathedrals, most notably the St. Louis Cathedral overlooking Jackson Square. The Stained Glass Cathedral Art design draws direct inspiration from the vibrant, sunlight-drenched stained glass windows of these historic sanctuaries. The process begins by applying a smooth layer of silver chrome foil over the entire nail plate to act as an internal light reflector. Over this brilliant base, sheer, glassy “jelly” polishes in traditional carnival purple, emerald, and gold are precisely painted into geometric, arching shapes, leaving thin gaps between each color segment.
Once the colorful jelly sections are set, a thick, jet-black gel line work is applied over the gaps, recreating the heavy lead cames that hold real stained glass panels together. The combination of the reflective chrome underneath and the transparent jewel-toned colors on top produces an effect that literally seems to glow from within when exposed to light. The design is finished with a high-shine topcoat that smoothes over the black lead lines, creating a flawless, glass-smooth surface that mirrors the spiritual, historical, and artistic depth of classic New Orleans stained glass masterworks.
