9. Velvet Pumpkin with Real Stem
Velvet pumpkins are a staple of high-end boutique autumn decor, but they are surprisingly simple to make at home for a fraction of the price. The key to making these look ultra-luxurious and authentic is using rich, heavy velvet fabric in deep autumnal shades like mustard, plum, emerald, and rust, and topping them with real, dried pumpkin stems saved from previous years or gathered from local patches.
Cut a circle out of your chosen velvet fabric, about twice the diameter of your finished pumpkin size. Using a strong needle and thread, sew a simple running stitch all the way around the edge of the circle. Place a handful of plastic pellets or dried beans at the bottom for weight, fill the rest with polyester fiberfill, and pull the thread tight to gather the fabric into a pouch. Secure the thread, then use a hot glue gun to attach a real, dried pumpkin stem over the gathered opening, pressing down firmly until set.
