20. Repurposed Brass Bowl Sconce
Introduction A striking modern fixture made by transforming a vintage hammered or spun-brass serving bowl into a reflective wall shield.
What This Idea Means This design turns vintage metal tableware into a sculptural accent. The bowl conceals the light source while reflecting a warm, indirect halo across the surrounding wall.
How to Make It
- Source a vintage shallow brass, bronze, or copper bowl (8–12 inches in diameter).
- Drill a centered mounting hole through the base using a step-drill bit designed for sheet metal.
- Fasten a low-profile stand-off bracket behind the bowl so it sits 1 to 2 inches off the wall.
- Mount a small LED puck or socket facing inward toward the bowl’s concave interior, projecting light back onto the polished metal surface.
Tips & Variations
- Matte Black Exterior: Paint the exterior rim of the bowl matte black while keeping the inside high-shine polished gold.
- Fluted Bowl Edges: Use a fluted or scalloped vintage brass tray to cast petal-like light patterns on the wall.
- Concealed Ring Light: Run a circular warm LED strip around the back rim to create a clean double-halo lighting effect.
